Delectable. Wonderful. Gluten-free Cereal.

Time has flown by during the past two days! I have been working from Bull City Forward, a local organization dedicated to support social enterprises in Durham, NC. The spirit of many passionate entrepreneurs working in the same office is awesome and super motivating!

Gluten-free CerealBesides this, there has been some other pretty good stuff happening at Custom Choice Cereal this week. Obviously I am still stoked about our partnership with gourmet retailer Dean & DeLuca, bringing gluten-free cereal to their stores in New York City. But what always excites me most is the awesome feedback we get about our cereal, so I had to share another one with you.

Rita designed her own cereal and reviewed it on her blog One 2 Try and starts out by saying that “I wanted to create even more cereal, it was so much fun”. When her concoction arrived conveniently at her doorstep she thought that it looked delectable. There are big cherries and lots of coconut flakes. It smells wonderful. I could not wait to taste my creation. The corn flakes are delicately crunchy while the cherries and blueberries add a nice chewiness to the cereal. The coconut adds even more crunch. The berries add the sweetness. This is really good. I am enjoying munching right from the bag. I had some with milk too and it was my perfect cereal taste sensation.”

You know what I thought when I read this review? Even if I tried I couldn’t come up with better feedback. So what are you waiting for? Design your perfect gluten-free breakfast and experience what Rita describes as “The fun comes in the creating exactly what you want in your cereal. It is your Custom Choice Cereal. Munch Munch Munch… it is so good!”

Gluten-free Valentine's Extravaganza

We at Custom Choice Cereal learn again and again that those who designed their own cereal give better feedback than we ever could! That’s why we’d like to start with a quote from from Maureen about the custom cereal that she reviewed on her blog Simply Stacy:

“It was delicious and my kids just loved it. I enjoyed it with almond milk as a cereal and also as a topping to my yogurt with both being equally ‘yummy’. I especially appreciated that it includes a nutritional label specifically for my mix so I can portion this correctly for my lifestyle.”

Goji BerriesMaureen also makes another great comment in her review because she starts out by saying that even though she does not follow a gluten-free diet she “still found the concept of creating my own cereal intriguing and I would highly recommend this for everyone”. That’s exactly the point! We never fully understood why so many foods that are naturally gluten-free (duh, they’re called corn flakes) have gluten added to them during processing. But that’s just something you learn as one of the first things when going gluten-free – that stuff is literally everywhere!

We especially appreciate that Maureen also highlighted the fact that you can get really creative in naming your cereal and couldn’t have said in any better:

“Once your mix has been created it is hand packaged to ensure freshness and arrives with your own personalized label which was a really neat feature that my five year old son thought was brilliant.”

Maureen really is brilliant because she immediately discovered the potential, saying that “this would make a fantastic gift idea for Valentine’s Day”. So true! And the naming option is perfect for a personal message that your Valentine will see bright and early. Add some cranberries or goji berries to the cereal to give it the appropriate color and it’s a surprise that can’t go wrong! By the way, if you order by tomorrow, February 11th, you’ll receive 10% off with the coupon code “valentine”!

Celiac Disease Explained

Great Day HoustonDespite running the risk that some of you might sigh “Not again!” I still have to share a video about celiac disease and following a gluten-free diet from Great Day Houston. At the end of the day, celiac disease is still heavily under-diagnosed and I therefore feel that it can’t be mentioned often enough!

The great Angel Burch of Gluten Free Life TV where she talks about her road to diagnosis. Despite the staged audience reactions – which I thought are pretty funny – this gives a comprehensive overview of celiac disease (yeah, it’s not an allergy), what’s available in the gluten-free market, food safety & reading labels as well as the omnipresent issue of cross-contamination, typical symptoms and how to get tested.

If you look closely at the right side of the screen you’ll even be able to catch a glimpse of a bag of your one and only Custom Choice Cereal – Organic Corn Flakes with Natural Almonds, Cranberries and a double serving of Organic Raisins (copy mix ID 9894fd into the re-order box to get this cereal)!

There are two ways to see all of our awesome gluten-free cereal: 1) roughly two thirds into the video the camera shifts and you’ll see our cereal in its entire beauty or 2) design your own perfect breakfast cereal and enjoy Your Gluten Freedom at home! I’m just saying – I know what I’d do… ;-)

P.S. Also watch the video Cut Out the Sodium for a bigger mentioning of Custom Choice Cereal right at the beginning!

10 Gluten-free Summer Camps 2011

Katie ChalmersEven though February just started I am sure that especially the parents among you are already thinking about the summer. If you have a child with celiac disease you might have ruled out Summer Camps for him or her in the past. No need to do so anymore as camps across the country have realized the need to serve the gluten-free community. Camp Kanata right here in North Carolina is just one of them, and we sponsored last year’s gluten-free week with our cereal – which the campers absolutely loved!

Fortunately for me, the one and only Katie Chalmers, mother to a daughter with celiac disease and author of the book “Mommy, What Is Celiac Disease”, has already done the work and compiled a list of 10 gluten-free summer camps in 2011. She has even be so nice to allow me to copy it here, so THANK YOU, Katie!

Please be aware that the camps fill up quickly and that you should act by the end of the month to reserve a spot for your child! Katie has been so nice to organize the camps chronologically. If both you and your child are interested in seeing a few different gluten-free camps and across the country over the summer, you can (at least in theory) attend 7 of the 10 camps this year :-)

Gluten-free Q&A with Dr. Stephen Wangen

Dr. Stephen WangenWe at Custom Choice Cereal are excited to offer you another opportunity to ask gluten-free expert Dr. Stephen Wangen your questions about celiac disease, gluten intolerance, living without wheat, and whatever else want to know!

Stephen suffers from celiac disease himself, understands the challenges of a gluten-free diet, and is very passionate about helping you. Similar to us, his passion was a call that he answered by co-founding The IBS Treatment Center in Seattle, WA, blogging as The Gluten Free Doctor, and serving on the Board of Trustees for the Gluten Intolerance Group of North America. We invite you to read more about Stephen and his books in our introduction to our advisors.

Dr. Wangen is going out of his way to provide this wonderful service, and we appreciate your understanding that out of respect for Dr. Wangen and his time we have to limit each session to 5 questions on a first-come, first-served basis. The First Gluten-free Commercial

“Can a little bowl of cereal change your life? I think it can.” And so do we at Custom Choice Cereal! That’s exactly the reason we created the only company that puts YOU in control and lets YOU design the perfect gluten-free cereal with only the ingredients YOU love!

General Mills has been at the forefront of bringing gluten-free food to the community, and if you haven’t already done so I highly recommend you check out their website dedicated to all of their gluten-free products. General Mills now created quite a buzz among those with celiac disease and everyone else following a gluten-free diet by producing the first commercial dedicated to a gluten-free product. They are exactly right when they say that “one of the challenges of being gluten-free is finding choices the whole family will love”.

One last comment before I share this awesome commercial with you: Custom Choice Cereal. Over 2.5 billion combinations. Gluten Free.”

Creative Cereal Names

The fourth week of 2011 is coming to an end, and once again you have been able to surprise us at Custom Choice Cereal with creative names for your cereal mixes. It’s a lot of fun for us to see the three groups of “namers” – those who name their gluten-free cereal after themselves/their child/a friend, those who list the ingredients of their breakfast creations, and those who are really creative/innovative/crazy.

This being said, we included one example of each in this week’s best names for your cereals:

5. Blueberry, Macadamia Nut Mix (mix ID b0f13c). Classic type 2
4. Randy’s Raisin Granola (mix ID 9b0727). Type 1 and 2 combined
3. Troy’s Tropical Treasure (mix ID b27801). Clearly a naming “hybrid” of all three naming types
2. Mommy? I’m Hungry! Morning Cereal (mix ID 47dabd). Type 3
1. And this week’s winner is Crazy House Mix (mix ID 62f4a1)

Thanks again for making our job fun. We look forward to being surprised by a great name when you design your next gluten-free cereal and hope you have a wonderful weekend!
